If you think you know the answers to these and other questions of Art, then come to the Digby Hall on Tuesday 13th October for an evening of Fun, Friendship and Good Food – and a chance to pit your wits against some of the sharpest minds in Sherborne!
On Tuesday 13th October some forty members and guests assembled at the Digby Hall for The Big Art Quiz.
The evening got off to an inauspicious start when the Hall’s projector decided that it could only project pictures upside down. We briefly considered whether showing the images upside down might add an intriguing level of mystery to the questions, before Jenny Newman’s quick thinking saved the day and she rushed home to collect her own projector.
Technical problems apart, the evening went swimmingly. After an introductory glass of wine the teams settled at their tables to enjoy a delicious buffet provided by Helen Furness and her team. The quiz then kicked off, with seven sections covering everything from general art, through architecture and design to self-portraits and animals in art. Most people found some of the answers easy enough, but others – like those on the art movement Orphism and the Belgian painter James Ensor – proved more challenging.
There was a spirit of friendly rivalry throughout and no cheating – that I am aware of – though some teams were noticeably more competitive than others ! At the end of the evening the points were added up and Team Olympias, led by Annie Coultas, were declared worthy winners, having scored an impressive 87 out of a possible 100 points ! In keeping with the spirit of the occasion, all our guests were offered a souvenir rubber duck at the end of the evening.
A big thank you to all those who took part and to Julian Halsby, Jenny Newman, Mary Jacobsen and Angela White for devising the questions and delivering them with so much enthusiasm !
